This formula uses Ora-Blend/SF or Ora-Plus and Ora-Sweet/SF; 1:1, and has been approved by the Extemporaneous Compounding Pharmacists' Group.


Alternative formula if Ora-products are not available.


Formula   (based on reference 1)

Clozapine Suspension 20mg per mL
Clozapine tablets  100mg 20 
Carboxymethylcellulose g
Parabens 0.1  %
Syrup 20  mL
Water to   100  mL
Expiry:  7 days
Storage:  Refrigerate
Shake well before use

  1. Exact details of the base were not provided.  It was described as a paediatric mixture base containing syrup, carboxymethylcellulose, methylhydroxybenzoate and propylhydroxybenzoate.
  2. Methylcellulose 1% could be used as an alternative suspending base.
  3. The suspensions were chemically stable for 18 days but an expiry date of 7 days was recommended due to lack of microbial testing.
  4. This study has some limitations as the study period was only 18 days and stability was only assessed at room temperature.  Further studies are required to assess longer term stabilty.
  5. Dispersing the tablet prior to giving the dose could be considered.
