Griseofulvin is very slightly soluble in water and sparingly soluble in alcohol. It occurs commercially as microsize or ultramicrosize particles. The oral bioavailability of the microsize form is variable (25 - 75%) whereas the ultramicrosize form is almost completely absorbed. Suspensions are commercially available in some countries. Formal stability studies on suspensions prepared from tablets have not been located.
A suggested formulation is provided below. Due to potential problems with poor dose consistency and variable bioavailability alternatives should be considered whenever possible. For example it may be possible to use tablet fractions, powder papers or an alternative drug.
